Carrying Out My GAME Plan - Week 3

Last week I discovered two National Education Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) that I was still unsure of and did not know exactly how to meet with my students.  This week I am working on my "GAME Plan," (Cennamo, Ross & Ertmer, 2009, p.3) to try and meet these standards.  The standards again that I am building my knowledge and confidence on are:

2d. "Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching," (ISTE, 2008).

4c.  "Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information," (ISTE, 2008).

Last week I've set my GOALS for these standards and now I will focus on the ACTION that I must take to carry it out.  In order for me to go forward with my "GAME Plan," (Cennamo, Ross & Ertmer, 2009, p.3), I must figure out all of the resources that I will need.    With standard 2d, I felt that the best place for me to start would be with the fifth grade Writing content.  Currently, my students have just started working on their Picture Book unit.  In this unit, they listen to a varied of text, discuss the author's purpose and use each text as a model as they start to create their own picture book.  Last year all of my students created a picture book by hand and used no technology.  We pondered the idea of typing their pieces, but time got the best of us.  For standard 2d, I feel that I will need the text that goes with the unit, each student's writing piece, access to the student computers, time when my students and I can sit one-on-one to discuss their project and the next steps for them, I also want to look into online websites that promote student writing.  Last year I found this website that allowed students to type their stories online and then they could view them at home with their parents.  If you paid a small price you could also had the company print out and mail you your picture book.  I've misplaced the website, but this is something I need to research again.

Using standard 4c I've decided to just use a class meeting time each day to work on this standard of proper use with technology.  I understand my students are in fifth grade, but it still amazes me how careless some students can be when they are in a rush or are even talking directly to me and how they handle technology.  What I will need to work with my students on this standard is chart paper, markers, a camera, our Promethean Board, PowerPoint software.  I think that as a finished product, my students should create a presentation that shows the proper usage.  We could play it occasionally as a reminder when using technology and they can present it to the younger students in lower grade levels.  My students love being the role models of the school, so this would be ideal!

Additional information that I would need for both standards is their Writing objectives, I'll need to type up their guidelines for the technology usage and come up with a contract with the class.  I'd also need to create a contract that can be enlarged like a poster that they can all sign, as well as make a copy that will be signed by them, sent home for a parent or guardian to sign and then I'd like to photo copy each so that I have a signed copy and they keep one as well.  One big thing that will help me reach my goal for each standard is that I keep in close contact with my Long Term Sub.  I am currently on maternity leave and do not have access to my classroom physically  but I keep in contact with my Long Term Sub.  I will have to create the lessons at home and email them to her to use in the class.

Currently, besides working on the idea of my "GAME Plan," (Cennamo, Ross & Ertmer, 2009, p.3), I have not done much with it.  This week I will be creating my PowerPoints for my Long Term Sub to use with my students and making sure that I get them to her by Friday, so that she can look over the plans and present each to my class by Monday next week.  I know this is going to be my biggest challenge, not being allowed in my classroom, but I've known my Long Term Sub for a while now and I know she will help me make these lessons happen with my students.

  1. Hello Heidi,

It sounds like you have your GAME plan under control, and well thought out. The project you are undertaking with your class sounds in depth, but I bet the students love it. You mentioned a website in which students could submit their story or text, then view it at home with their parents. You'd have to double check, but I'm pretty sure that Google Docs is exactly that. I used it several years and two schools ago. From what I remember, once you have account with Google, you can submit and store documents, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and others, online, to be accessed anywhere. So, students can begin their story at school in the computer lab or classroom, then if they need to make corrections, or want to share it with parents, they can access it at home by logging on to their Google Docs account.

You should check it out. I hope I'm correct. If I'm way off base, I'm so sorry. I know if Google Docs is not the program that there is one out there. Good luck, and congrats on the baby!

    1. Daniel,

I have never heard of doing those types of things with Google, but then again you can do almost anything with Google today. The site I was talking about actually bounded a book for the student and made it look like it was a real published book. I still haven't found it, but the search still continues! I'll look more into Google as well. I can always use a plan B if I cannot find the site I am thinking of.

      Thanks for the additional resources.

  2. Hello Heidi,
I agree with Daniel. Your picture book unit sounds well-planned for the inclusion of technology. There certainly will be challenges in trying to manage your project from afar, but you are lucky to know your long term sub so you can trust them to follow out your plan.
Google Docs is a great way to share files. In my opinion it is easy to set up and use with students. You can set up shared folders that can be automatically synced between students home computers and your computer, if you want to have access to their files.
Depending on what you are looking for, it sounds like you could use any of the variety of free blogging websites to manage this as well. THis way the students could respond to prompts from you and engage with each other as well.
I do not know what technology is currently in your classroom, but I thought it might be neat for you to skype into your class to say hi to them and give them some encouragement (or instructions) as they make progress through the project. However, if you are on leave I'm not sure if this would be appropriate for you and your situation.
Good luck with your project (and the baby!)
    Cheers,

    Ben

    1. Ben,

Thanks for your kind thoughts! I have tried to record a short clip of me and baby for my students using Media Player, but it does not sound like my sub was able to access it for my students. I know that VoiceThreads work well in the classroom as I've done them with my students in the past, so this may be the route I have to take. I will definitely check out Google Docs for my students. The only downfall to this is that out of my 22 students, I know for a fact that about 9 of them have access at home. I have access to a computer lab and a mobile lab, but if the network is shaky that day then the lab tops do not work or connect to the network so it's very hit or miss in my school!
